Covenant House Michigan is a faith-based nonprofit organization that provides hope to homeless, runaway and at-risk youth ages 18-24. We provide shelter, educational and vocational programs, as well as other support services, to help overcome hurdles such as homelessness, unemployment, inadequate education, violence, drugs and gangs. Our goal is to redirect them onto a path toward meaningful and successful adulthood. CHM has come to be known by area young people as a place they can go to build a better future and be treated with respect and unconditional love. Over 60,000 youths have been served by CHM since its inception in September, 1997. General Description:  Person in this position is responsible for serving evening meals and possibly covering shifts which would involve preparing meals for agency clients and staff.  Also for maintaining cleanliness of kitchen at all times. Educational and work experience requirements:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred. Course work or study in Culinary Arts a plus.
  • 1-2 years experience cooking for large numbers in a residential facility or similar environment required. Restaurant experience acceptable.
  • Knowledge of state of Michigan food and kitchen regulations.
  • Valid ServSafe certification required. Food handlers may be acceptable.
  • Sufficient health, ability, experience, and education to perform the assigned duties with or without accommodation.

  • Awareness of and sensitivity to the needs of homeless and at-risk youth that Covenant House Michigan serves.
Essential skills and abilities:
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, representatives of other agencies, and the public.
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally with both internal and external individuals and/or businesses.
  • Ability to work assigned shifts, which may include evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to lift and move objects weighing 5-50+ pounds.
  • Ability to work standing and walking a minimum of 8 hours per day/shift.
  • Ability to drive agency or personal vehicles to transport items and/or persons.
  • Ability to use kitchen equipment and appliances such as knives, stove/oven, grill, coffee urns, etc.
Primary responsibilities:
  • Uphold Covenant House Michigan standards of conduct, policies and procedures in the spirit of the Covenant House Mission at all times.
  • Attend and participate in all scheduled or mandatory meetings, trainings and supervision sessions as requested.
  • Serve evening meal.
  • Maintain holding temperatures.
  • Prepare carry-out plates according to submitted lists from Crisis & Rights of Passage buildings.
  • Properly label, date and store leftovers.
  • Count meals and carry-outs and transfer information to the daily accounting sheet.
  • Leave kitchen in a clean and tidy state for the next shift.
  • Maintain cleanliness of kitchen by properly disposing of food products/garbage, cleaning/sanitizing all surfaces, washing/drying dishes, etc.
  • Prepare daily meals for agency clients and staff, as needed
  • Follow monthly menu that meet nutritional guidelines.
  • Collect properly completed meal tickets from each person served.
  • Unload delivery trucks and put items away properly. Assure that all items are properly labeled and rotated.
  • Assist with organizing food for special events and special meals, which includes decoration of dining room and preparing theme menus.
  • Keep track of inventory control and logging sheets.
  • Pack inventory for other agency facilities.
  • Perform all other tasks as requested by the Director of Property Management and CHM administration.

Summary of PositionTo provide supervision and delivery of residential services to residents as well as represent Covenant House Michigan by greeting guests, residents, staff and volunteers within the framework of the Mission Statement, Five Principles and policies and procedures of CHM. The RA will support, guide, and redirect the path of these youth toward safe, productive and independent lives. In addition to supervision, required services also include monitoring, transporting and meeting the basic daily needs, of the youth in their care, in a way that positively supports each resident’s developmental and individual goals. Hourly Pay Rate: $19.00 or $17.00
  • $19.00 (with a bachelor's degree)
  •                           OR
  • $17.00 (without a bachelor's degree)
Educational and Work Experience Requirements:
  • High school diploma, GED required, Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services or related field preferred.
  • Minimum two years experience working with at-risk youth.
  • Previous experience working in the mental health field also strongly desired.
  • Knowledge of adolescent development, crisis intervention, multi-cultural awareness.
  • CPR and First Aid certification desired.
  • Valid Michigan driver’s license with agency deemed acceptable driving record.
  • Prospective employees are required to federal and state background checks, successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen.

  • Ability to conduct group meetings.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and projects.
  • Ability to lift and move objects typically weighing 5-35 pounds.
  • Ability to work flexible schedule when needed.
  • Ability to take direction from Managers and Shift Leaders
  • Willingness to improve skills.
  • Ability to work with other programs within CHM and community partners.

Summary: Split Shift (5 day) Work Schdule: Wednesday, Thursday, Sunday: 11am - 7pm Friday and Saturday from 7:30am - 3:30pm Under the supervision of the Outreach Manager, the desirable street Outreach Worker will be responsible for working as part of the Outreach team to fulfill Covenant House Michigan’s Outreach goals which include locating and building relationships with homeless neighbors, providing advocacy, and assisting with connection to benefits and housing readiness. The primary goal of the Outreach Worker is to identify and meet the needs of our unsheltered homeless and at-risk youth through direct street outreach activities and through community referrals from mental health, hospitals, municipalities and other social service type agencies, as well as to increase community awareness and provide support to our homeless youth neighbors. Education and Experience:
  • High School diploma or equivalent required; fluent in speaking Spanish preferred.
  • Minimum 1-2 years of experience required in social service agency working with at-risk youth.
  • Valid Michigan Driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
  • Ability, experience, and education to perform the assigned duties with or without accommodation.

  • Awareness of and sensitivity to the needs of homeless and at-risk youth that CHM serves.

  • Uphold the agency’s Mission, standards of conduct and policies and procedures at all times.
  • Attend & participate in all mandatory meetings, training and supervision sessions as requested.
  • Assist the Outreach Manager with contact of youth on the streets.
  • Maintain a safe & inviting atmosphere while interacting with youth on the streets.
  • Respond appropriately to emergencies and crises while in the community.
  • Provide timely and accurate documentation of outreach activities to the Outreach Manager.
  • Consistently demonstrate responsible driving habits at all times.
  • Submit accurate contact sheet documentation of assigned projects and ongoing program services.
  • Act as a liaison with community organizations & maintain awareness of community youth services.
  • Assist the Outreach Manager with making contacts in the community and with youth on the streets.
  • Canvass the streets to distribute Covenant House Michigan literature and items needed.
  • Report observations made on the streets that have the potential to affect the welfare of youth.
  • Establish positive relationships with youth & transport as needed to centers for community services.
  • Plan and coordinate outreach activities in conjunction with the Outreach Manager.
  • Assist the Outreach Manager in maintaining the Outreach van in good condition.
  • Perform all other tasks as requested by leadership.
