Covenant House Michigan is pleased to announce the purchase of an adjacent one-acre property at 3047-3089 Lawton Street. The property includes three vacant duplex structures and a six-unit apartment building just east of the Jeffries Freeway Service Drive, a short walk from our existing secure five-acre Detroit campus on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Our goal is to transform the apartments and structures to develop additional affordable housing units, which are in great demand.
“Through the clients and the families we serve, we know firsthand about the critical need for affordable housing along with wraparound services that address mental health, workforce development, job placement, life skills and more,” said Covenant House CEO Meagan Dunn. “When we learned the property was available for purchase, we knew this was the perfect time to expand our campus and deepen our impact for families in Detroit.”
Final plans for construction and the use of the buildings are still being determined.
“What was once a vibrant block in the early 1900’s fell into disrepair. We look forward to reinvigorating the area with green space, construction, and energy efficient improvements,” Dunn added. “Our vision also includes secure parking and first-floor retail space, potentially for a business that provides job training or a social enterprise. We want this new space to be an asset to our campus and the entire community.”
