You could say giving is their jam. Sisters-in-law Suzy Williams and Wendy Moco, residents of Grosse Ile, are co-chairs of the Ladies Jammie Drive Luncheon. Since 2008, they’ve been collecting new, unwrapped pajamas for young people in need. The program has received nearly 15,000 pairs of pajamas to date and many colorful and cozy PJs have gone to the young people at Covenant House Michigan.

“We really enjoy this partnership because I think Covenant House’s residents can sometimes be forgotten,” said Williams. “It’s easy to drive back to your comfortable home and forget. It’s easy to climb into your comfortable bed and forget. Through the Jammie Drive Luncheon, we can shine a light for just a brief moment on these kids and maybe it can help drive your mission and donations.”

It all started nearly 17 years ago. the sisters-in-law decided to get together with some friends and make a positive difference. First, they participated in a coat drive. Then, they decided to focus on collecting Christmas pajamas. The idea caught on and it grew and grew. Today, hundreds of local women attend the luncheon and contribute every year.

“My sister-in-law and I are touched and really excited to give this little glimpse of happiness to the kids at Covenant House,” Moco says. “We love what it does for the community.”

Back in March, they got to see the pajama effect firsthand. We held a “Pajama Jam” luncheon of our own complete with pizza party and talent show supported by Howard University college students on Alternative Spring Break. Amici’s Pizza Sports Bar and Grill supplied the pizza and our residents rocked their jammies.

Suzy and Wendy looked on, smiled, and joined in the fun.

“Your kids are the heroes,” Williams says. “Your kids that climb out of their circumstances through the support of you and your donors.”
