General Description: 

The Shift Leader will be responsible for assisting the program and assistant manager in carrying out the day-to-day responsibilities of the programs team in order to fulfill the mission of Covenant House Michigan – Grand Rapids, as well as upholding Covenant House Michigan’s policies and procedures and codes of conduct and assuring that the needs of our youth are being met.

Educational and Work Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Services required.
  • 5+ years’ experience in a related field, preferably in a residential program.
  • Minimum of 2 years of related experience in a youth serving organization.
  • Previous experience working in the mental health field desired.
  • Knowledge of adolescent development, crisis intervention & multicultural awareness required.
  • Valid Michigan Driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
  • Demonstrated computer proficiency working with Microsoft Office software.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all persons associated with the agency.
  • Ability to immediately respond to emergencies and resolve issues with youth and/or staff.
  • Ability to take direction from manager and assistant manager.
  • Ability to drive agency or personal vehicles to transport items and/or persons.
  • Ability to participate in recreational activities with youth served as required.
  • Ability to defuse physical and verbal confrontations with youth using appropriate techniques and/or interventions.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule and handle multiple task/projects when needed.
  • Supervise operation of center as designated by manager/assistant manager.
  • Call in RX refills and monitor medication log for shift as needed.
  • Provide crisis counseling, support and planning for emergency service requests.
  • Develop and provide leadership for Life Skill Groups and Support Meetings.
